Royal Borough of Kingston

  • Of the 10 primary schools surveyed, falling within RBK, 2 schools use the borough provision of a hot meal transported to the school, 2 have successfully introduced in-house catering and the remaining 6 offer no hot meal.
  • In the same group, only 2 have fully operational kitchens, 1 has a reheat facility, 3 have small kitchens which are unsuitable for catering and 4 have no kitchens at all.
  • The borough's hot school meals are supplied by Cygnet. Produced in Nottingham, they are delivered in a raw state to a hub kitchen within the borough. The meals are then cooked and delivered in hot boxes to surrounding schools.
  • Both schools using the borough's hot meal service have a 26% take-up. In one of the schools, 78% of hot meals served are to children entitled to free school meals.
  • In schools offering no hot meal, the borough contractor provides a packed lunch to children entitled to free school meals.
  • Both secondary schools in RBK, self-manage successful meal services with around 50% take-up.
